THE Yap family have just found a new reason to spend hours in front of the telly: It’s now much more convenient for them to channel- surf after StarHub’s revamp.

As subscribers to the telco’s cable-TV service for the past 10 years, the brood of four, who live in a four-room flat in Upper Boon Keng Road, were among 539,000 households affected by StarHub’s massive channel migration, which took effect last Friday.

Thank goodness it has been given the thumbs up by most viewers my paper spoke to.

As part of its strategy to introduce more content and aid customers’ recall, StarHub has renumbered its more than 150 channels according to genres.

Channel numbers, which used to range from single to triple digits, are now three digits and have been regrouped into eight categories, such as Sports (200 series), Entertainment (500 series) and News (700 series).

It is the first time the numbering system has been changed since 1995, when the telco introduced its cable-TV service.

For example, channels such as HBO and Star Movies are grouped under Movies, or the 600 series.

They are now 601 and 622, respectively, as opposed to 60 and 58 before.

Mr Ricky Yap, 54, said: “We can flip to similar channels more easily than before, when they used to be all over the place.

It seems more organised and makes watching TV more fun.”

The manager at a manufacturing company said that each member of his family watches up to 15 hours of TV every week.

His eight-year-old son, Caleb, has also been having a field day figuring out the new numbers of his favourite cartoon channels, Cartoon Network (316) and Playhouse Disney (311).

He has already memorised the new channel numbers.
Those who use the recording function on their HubStation and HubStation HD boxes will also be glad to know that their stored programmes will not be affected.

However, those who have pre-set recordings may wish to verify that the settings reflect the new channel numbers, said a StarHub spokesman.

Still, other subscribers my paper spoke to were finding it hard to adjust to the new numbering system.

Technical engineer Hanis Farina Mohd Ariffin, 25, who is a fan of education and lifestyle channels such as E! Entertainment (441) and The Style Network (442), said: “It’s quite troublesome to have to ‘reformat’ what I had already memorised.”

Graphic designer Mark Tay, 28, agreed, but praised StarHub for its prescience in easing customers into the change.

“The new system takes some time to get used to, but StarHub has been good at helping out clueless customers,” he said.

He was referring to the free three-day preview of all channels that the telco offered over the weekend to accustom viewers to the new system.

The preview ended last night.

For now, viewers can also key in a channel’s old number to find out what its new number is.

They then have to simply hit the “OK” button to gain access to the channel.

Last week, StarHub also introduced four channels: entertainment channels truTV (446) and WarnerTV (515), sports channel KIX (207) and suspense channel Thrill (618).

Of course, with different numeric group identities for specific genres make it easier and more convenient, especially with such vast contents and channels.
Thumbs Up

Charges is still, a long way........................of..............a more attractive bundle. Thumbs Down

Reason? Smile

One channel can only be watched at any one time, so why pay the excess for the other channels??? Hur?

Go to Channel 899 from 30 April for a complete channel listings of the current and new channel numbers. Smile

FTA channels (5, 8, etc...) will remain at the same numbers if you do not view through the set-top box.
