Residents contributed views and ideas over the 8-month-long HDB Heartware Forum, comprising a series of focus group discussions and public dialogues.

The discussion exercise also saw many calling for wet markets and hawker centres.

HDB has since decided to put up a site in Sengkang for this purpose, three years after it stopped building wet markets.

The pilot project will be tendered to a private operator who will build and manage it.

Ms Fu said: "We are hoping to bring back the old-style hawker centre where it's naturally ventilated and you do not need to air-condition the place, therefore lowering the overall cost of operations.

"But having said that, I think we will ask HDB to look at the criteria and the demographic requirements of different estates."

The panel also hopes to see more schools and community sharing available facilities.

So far, 50 secondary schools have opened up their fields to the public and 50 more primary schools will soon follow suit.

Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education Masagos Zulkofli said: "It could be something that the school and the community might co-fund – maybe a gym or auditorium – facilities that the public, on its own, may not optimally use."

Many of the initiatives are still at the planning stage and the HDB is expected to announce more details in the months ahead.

But even as the living environment is enhanced, the history of each estate will not be forgotten.

HDB is looking at ways to preserve the heritage of the Geylang Serai area as it is being redeveloped.

It is exploring options for the new Geylang Serai market, which may be built in a style reminiscent of rustic Malay architecture, with an exhibition space to showcase its history.

In today's ST, there is an sub-article on this...

Wet Market In New Estates?
By Joyce Teo

Wet market could make a comeback in new estates after the forum consultation exercise called for their return.

The Housing Board, in a policy U-turn, responded to resident demands by allowing a private operator to build and run a wet market and hawker centre in Sengkang, possibly on a site in Ponggol Central.

If this project works, more may follow.

Wet markets and hawker centres can serve as a "social hub" for neighbourhoods, said the forum report.

This is especially so for older folk and housewives for frequent the markets and take the opportunity to catch up with each other and share the latest neighbourhood news, the report added.

The HDB also acknowledged that it can do more to preserve the heritage of towns when it develops or upgrades them.

This was in response to a suggestion that it start dedicated programmes to strengthen and preserve the heritage of individual towns.

One example cited was the new Geylang Serai market which could have space set aside to showcase its history.

The forum also recommended more sharing of school facilities.

Senior Parliamentary Secretary (Education) Masagos Zulkifli said that more than 50 secondary schools have facilities already open to the community. Fifty more primary schools will follow, he said yesterday.

Ponggol Central (actually should be Punggol Central) consists of the following:

Compassvale Gardens RC
Blks 257A-C Compassvale Road
Blks 258A-D, 259A-C Compassvale Road
Blks 260A-D, 261A-D Compassvale Street
Blks 262A-D Compassvale Street

Compassvale Green RC
Blks 297A-B Compassvale Street
Blks 298A-D, 299A-C Compassvale Street

Punggol Grove RC
Blks 201A-D Punggol Field
Blks 202A-B,203A-B Punggol Field
Blks 204A-D, 205A Punggol Field
Blks 293-299 Punggol Central

Compassvale Haven RC
Blks 244-249, 251-256 Compassvale Rd
Blks 250A-250D Compassvale Street
Blk 251-256 Compassvale Road

Compassvale Lodge RC
Blks 290A-C Compassvale Crescent
Blks 295A-C Compassvale Crescent
Blks 296A-C Compassvale Crescent
Blk 291A-D Compassvale Crescent
Blks 292A-Compassvale Crescent
Blks 292A-295C Compassvale Street

Compassvale Plains RC
Blks 231-241 Compassvale Walk

Compassvale Southgate RC
Blks 200A,B,D, 202C Sengkang East Road
Blks 201A-D, 202 Compassvale Drive
Blks 202A-B, 204B-D Compassvale Drive
Blks 203A-E, 204A Compassvale Road

Compassvale Villa RC
Blks 205A-C, 206A-D Compassvale Lane
Blks 223A-D, 224A-D Compassvale Walk

Compassvale Vista RC
Blks 225A-C Compassvale Walk
Blks 226A-226C Compassvale Walk
Blks 228A-C,229-230 Compassvale Walk
Blks 227A-D Compassvale Drive

So the new market, if everythings goes according to the report, will be in Compassvale. Looking at the "empty land" available in SK, should be around Compass Point area. My guess is that it would probably be somewhere furthest away from the existing market at Rivervale Plaza.

Nothing new lah... if you consider that Punggol CC is at Hougang Ave 6, next to Hougang Mall. Very Happy

If you are refering to the road "Punggol Central", yes, it is in Punggol (aka Punggol New Town, aka Punggol 21).

But I think the article mentions "in Sengkang"... hence it is likely that it is refering to 'Punggol Central Constituency" in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, which comprise of the 9 RCs mentioned, which 8 are in SK (Compassvale), and only 1 in PG (Punggol Grove RC).
