You can blamed the National Policy at one time, the Speak Mandarin Campaign had deprived and destroyed the authenticity of the different dialects of the bygone era. Why? While learning to speak Mandarin, we don't have to drop dialects.
I, for one, never dropped my dialect. As I have to speak with my mother and her generation of relatives and friends.

Never follow blindly, only follow what is necessary and practical. Smile

hahaha.... looks like u are like my siblings & I.... we seem to be the very few families in SG who speak dialects (in our case, Teochew) among ourselves & with my mom & her brothers & sisters (both my mom & dad were born to Teochew parents too! ) We also speak Teochew with our paternal cousins too whenever we meet up. Nod Sadly my siblings & cousins (& even I!) speak Chinese or English with their children now so the Teochew language may diminish by the next generation. Very Sad

PS. I have told myself I will teach my son to speak at least Teochew as he grows up so that he can talk with my mom in the same language. Nod
